A stunning surreal landscape image depicting a journey or a quest to find another land. The origins of this work go back a long way to 1994! In my black and white film days many of my images were pictorial or landscape. The bare bones of this image had survived - quite extraordinary really as it wasn't even a great photo! So this image was created from a photo of a single tree - the classic lone tree - the one on the right of the image. The black and white photo was scanned and digitised and then I created a mirror image to create two trees. From there on the rest was intuition. It could have been anything except it had to have, for me, some sort of meaning! Then a few days later I was listening to some back catalogue music by Tangerine Dream - the 1983 album called "Hyperborea". I didn't know what the word meant so I did some research. Hyperborea is a fabled land (much in the same way as Atlantis or Lemuria) from the Greek myths about a land of eternal sun and Spring that lay beyond the cold northernmost extremities of the Earth and inhabited by a super race! The colours I had created in this piece emulated the cold leading into the warmth and so I wondered if this was a depiction of the final view before Hyperborea? Originally this piece did not include the outline of the land seen in the sky and between the two trees, so I inserted that later to suggest the land of Hyperborea rather than create Hyperborea itself. So, 24 years in the making! And the search is at an end!
